During the British House of Commons on 16 July 2014, Sir Hilary Beckles articulated a powerful temporal framework:
"It took all of the 19th century to uproot slavery from the Caribbean; from Haiti in 1804 to the Spanish sub-region in the 1880s. It took another 100 years to create citizenship, nationhood, and democracy across the Caribbean as a development framework...This 21st century will be the century of global reparatory justice."
As a reparations advocate with The Repair Campaign, our goal is to spearhead education in/ addressing the historical and ongoing injustices rooted in slavery and colonialism, particularly in relation to the UK.
We are currently gathering signatures of solidarity, not for a legal petition, but as a symbolic act to show that Caribbean people and our allies understand, support, and demand reparatory justice. This collective statement is a step toward amplifying our shared voice for repair and healing.
